I work with hospital data to discover bottlenecks and develop evidence-based strategies to improve patient flow.

I am a Research Scientist in the Health Data Analytics team at the CSIRO Australian e-Health Research Centre. My current research is focussed on applying Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques to model, analyse, predict, simulate and optimise patient flow through Australian public hospitals. My research interests include Applied Artificial Intelligence, Prediction and Forecasting, Planning and Scheduling, Multi Agent Systems, Distributed Constraint Reasoning, and Decision Making and Learning under Uncertainty.

My research in patient flow has helped hospitals identify and overcome bottlenecks in patient flow, improve their performance against emergency and inpatient discharge timeliness targets, and better manage overcrowding and crisis periods like winter flu outbreaks. Recent work has also influenced government policy, delivering the evidence base for patient outcome linked emergency department performance targets in Queensland public hospitals.

I am also a senior Adjunct Research Fellow at Griffith University’s Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems, and an active member of the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
