Digital health standards selection process

Perspectives and considerations in digital health standards, and standards selection

Who is involved?
The Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) is working with the Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) to develop a process for digital health standards selection for national use and adoption. This session will be followed up by targeted industry and key stakeholder consultation sessions through August coordinated by the AIDH.

Leading healthcare executive Dr Tim Smyth facilitated the discussion with senior representatives from the standards community, the AIDH and the Agency.

Bio
Tim is a former Deputy Secretary, NSW Ministry of Health and has over 30 years senior health service executive experience. Since 2012, he has provided legal and consulting services to the health and government sectors, together with Board director roles with Primary Health Networks and the Black Dog Institute. Relocating to Melbourne from Sydney earlier this year, he has had a short exposure to Melbourne coffee and culture and is now continuing a somewhat longer experience of Covid-19 lockdown!

Bettina was previously the Chief Operating Officer responsible for leading industry, government and jurisdictional engagement for the Agency, driving adoption and usability of digital health. At the National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA), Bettina was the Head of Risk and Assurance responsible for NEHTA’s risk and legal functions and quality assurance of NEHTA products. She also held the role of Head of Policy and Information Services responsible for national infrastructure operations, supply chain, clinical terminology and informatics, and policy and privacy.

David is a leading informatician with over 30 years’ experience in the health industry. He is currently based in Sydney, but has worked extensively in health informatics in Australia and Asia, in particular on the development of national information infrastructures. He has chaired international working groups based in Europe and the USA on electronic health records. He draws upon an extensive network of global leaders in health care, health services and informatics.

Grahame Grieve consults to national programs, vendor consortiums, individual vendors, and standards bodies about healthcare data exchange. He is the project lead and product director for FHIR, an HL7 Standard; co-chair of Modeling and Methodology Work Group at HL7; a member of HL7 Australia Technical Steering committee and the national Subject Matter Expert for clinical data exchange for the Australian National Health Record Program (ADHA).
