AIDH Partners in National Initiative to Strengthen Ethical Review of AI in Health Research

 
The Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) is proud to announce its involvement in the newly funded Research Ethics Plus AI (REP-AI) project, an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing the ethical review process of AI-related health research.

The REP-AI project, backed by over $2.2 million in funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and partner contributions, will focus on developing practical solutions for Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) and other governance bodies to assess AI health research more effectively. The project is led by Professor Stacy Carter from the University of Wollongong and features a diverse team of experts from institutions including the University of Tasmania, Macquarie University, and NSW Health.

AIDH CEO, Anja Nikolic, emphasised the importance of ethical practices in the rapidly evolving digital health space. “As digital health systems progress, governance structures must evolve to ensure AI-related research is both ethical and transparent. This project aligns with AIDH’s mission to advance digital health solutions that improve health outcomes,” she said.

The REP-AI project addresses a critical gap in AI research, offering evidence-based tools to help committees navigate the unique ethical challenges posed by AI technologies. With significant contributions from partners like Bellberry Limited, Alfred Health, and the Medical Technology Association of Australia, this initiative is set to shape the future of AI governance in health research.
